Serving as the foundation of Gazi University, Gazi Faculty of Education was founded in Ankara in 1926 under the leadership of Gazi (Veteran) Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and under the name of Orta Muallim Mektebi (The School for Middle School Teacher Training). It is one of the most established educational institutions that plays a significant role in the education of secondary school teachers of the republican generation. Gazi Faculty of Education was moved to the building currently known as the Gazi University Rector’s office building in 1929 along with Ankara Primary Teacher Training School for Boys and its name was changed to ’Gazi Institute for Teacher Training and Education for Middle Schools.’ In 1947, the name was changed again and became the ’Gazi Institute of Education‘, and in 1980, it was transformed into ’Gazi Higher School of Teacher Training', which provided education with a duration of 4 years. Since the establishment of Gazi University in 1982, it has been functioning as ‘Gazi Faculty of Education’. Gazi Faculty of Education has eight departments and twenty-seven different programs, where pre-service teachers are trained at preschool, elementary, middle and high school levels and for all branches. Courses at the current faculty are conducted on a semester basis. In addition to compulsory courses, there are also elective courses for students' interests and abilities in the departments. Gazi Faculty of Education has laboratories where students can conduct experiments and a natural sciences museum consisting of various geological stones, plants and stuffed animals. Gazi Faculty of Education is celebrating its 98th anniversary as of 2024.
